There’s an interesting article on the Guardian website about the state of the porn industry.
There are two problems with the article. The first is the tedious line taken by the authors, that porn ‘ trades in the debasement and degradation of women’. Now forgive me, but debasement and degradation is your taste, you can also find plenty of stuff featuring men being degraded and debased; it is an equal opportunities industry. The idea that porn degrades and debases women alone is an ideological bias, not a fact.
The second problem extends from the first; that ideological bias ignores the fact that, in the amateur porn community, many people produce and publish erotic material, often using the visual grammar of porn, because they enjoy it. No more reason than that; it arouses them, and pleases them. Some even become minor celebrities within the swinging or amateur porn communities as a result, and take risks with their reputation and privacy to pursue their desire to exhibit themselves and their tastes. Sometimes the people involved will even invite exposure, by publishing personal details and information, because they want the world to see them as they are.
If you don’t understand that, you shouldn’t be writing about the porn industry.
Don’t believe me?
Get yourself along to Flickr, or Tumblr, or Uk exhibitionist. Unless you understand that people send their pics there because they enjoy it, you aren’t qualified to comment.
Uk exhibitionist looks interesting
Serious head on , the idea that porn is intrinsically degrading has always said more to me about the fear of sex some feminists have than anything else.
I think you are a bit unfair to the article. The comment about porn being degrading was slipped into a sub-clause of the penultimate sentence. The rest of the article makes a reasonably convincing case that porn has followed normal business norms of consolidation and is not judgemental. Given one of the authors works for ‘Stop Porn Culture’ I am pretty amazed that the piece was so even handed and the moralizing was restricted to this one comment slipped in right at the end.
